KUSAF-USA, in partnership with the DC-based bipartisan organization One Korea Network (OKN), successfully hosted a press conference to voice opposition to the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act (H.R. 1369), which was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in March of this year. The event focused on expressing concerns about H.R. 1369 and highlighting the steps needed to achieve true peace.
The Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act is a bill that aims to reach a US-North Korea peace treaty and establish liaison offices in Washington and Pyongyang, thus highly affecting Korean Peninsula affairs. KUSAF-USA's goal was to analyze the bill in depth and present the risks of the bill, and share experts' opinions.
Speakers featured Rep. Carol Miller (R-WV-01), executive director of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) Greg Scarlatoiu, president of Center for Security Policy Frank Gaffney, and North Korean defector Justin Seo. They discussed the dangers of H.R. 1369 and the potential side effects of the bill. The public at the press conference included politicians, human rights activists, scholars, journalists, and Korean American community leaders.
KUSAF-USA Washington, D.C. regional chair Henry Song criticized the bill as "a sweet and tempting fake peace initiative that gives the North Korean dictatorship a free pass." HRNK executive director Greg Scarlatoiu warned of the dangers and risks of the bill. Submitted written statements such as from former U.S. State Department Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Morse Tan and former Tufts University Professor, Sung-Yoon Lee were also read at the conference.
By clearly voicing opposition to the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act, KUSAF-USA succeeded in informing the media and the public of the key concerns of H.R. 1369 and KUSAF-USA's mission. In the future, KUSAF-USA will continue to work for security and peace on the Korean Peninsula and promote our goals through related events and campaigns.
